Reacting to the 2021 Grammy Awards

I will admit, that every year, I find myself peering over this seemingly bottomless well.

It’s time to react to the Grammy’s. Again.

If you haven’t read any of my numerous articles about the Grammy’s, including Reacting to the 2020 Grammys, BET Awards are Better than the Grammys and Grammy 2019: Hip-Hop vs. The Recording Academy, go read it. You’ll realize that I don’t like writing about the Grammys and rarely find any pleasure in the practice. It feels like a chore I do to keep the views coming in and the Hip-Hop fans who enjoy the awards happy.

As for the latter group, why?

For the first time in five years, I can say that the Grammy’s weren’t completely wrong; they were majoratively wrong. There is no way that we are going to say that there is not a single Hip-Hop album - or black album for the matter - that doesn’t deserve to be album of the year. There is a large selection of black aritsts, within and outside of Hip-Hop, who are worthy of the award.

To see Megan Thee Stallion win multiple awards was nice and made me feel good a bit. Seeing Nas finally win after over twenty years in the Hip-Hop game felt really good. The rest of the results left me feeling empty.

Note that I said results. Not the show.

I haven’t watched a single grammy awards ceremony since my first Rap Clash year. It was 2018. I didn’t enjoy it and relegated myself to watching the results in the following days. I’ve never regretted my decision. I get my information and don’t have to watch people in gaudy attire force themselves to smile through saying that they ‘’love’’ an artist whose name they can’t say right.

So yeah, it’s been one of those years. I’m feeling better about the Grammys than what I normally do, but not enough to inherently care anymore. I almost feel klike joining the Weeknd and Jay Z in boycotting this ridiculous endeavor. Maybe, posting articles about this horrible award show is not worth it and is more a hassle and drain on my energy than anything? Maybe I like subjuggatting myself to misery and upset every time I don’t get a result I like? I don’t know.

Frankly put, wake me up when they release the nominees.

How did you feel about the Grammys this year? Were the winners the ones that you picked to win? Do the Grammys work? Should Hip-Hop boycott the Grammys as a whole?
