Certified Lover Boy vs. DONDA

With the return of The Rap Clash, it only made sense to bring back the crew in order to talk about 2021’s Hip-Hop Cold War: Drake vs. Kanye West. While both were rumored to release their albums well before, they did not drop when anyone thought they would. In fact, they were both delayed… to the same week. Therefore, it is only right for us to compare what these two artists have offered.

So here it is: Certified Lover Boy vs. Donda!

Isaiah: So Donda?

Donda is the tenth studio album by Kanye West. A legend in the rap game, Kanye has cemented his legacy through his unique sound and production in his projects ranging from classics such as The College Dropout to more experimental-sounding projects like 808s & Heartbreak. There doesn’t seem to be a barrier that Kanye can’t open the door to in the rap game. But with his recent lackluster projects and outside drama occurring in his life, it is fair to say that I wasn’t expecting much from his most recent release, however, after listening to the album in its entirety, I was pleasantly surprised.

Alexa: Certified Lover Boy, approved.

Now everyone knows that I am a certified Drizzy Drake fan, from lil skinny Aubrey on Degrassi to now as a Certified Lover Boy. I purposely waited to hear the hype from everyone, all my friends, my cousins EVERYONE before I actively listened to the album. Now when I say I listened to the album I mean I listened to the album. I listened while detangling my hair, I listened while deep conditioning my hair. So when I tell you physically could not agree less with *some* of y’all opinions (she says ever so respectfully), I mean it.

Ryan: CLB wins, by far.

There wasn’t much competition, in my opinion. In the track that speaks the most to the beef between Drizzy and Ye, Toronto’s Very Own says it best: “Far as the Drake era, man, we in the golden ages”. Every time we believe that Drake might be out for the count, he comes back and gives us a banger. While this is not the best album of his career, nor even of the year, I give it a 7 out of 10. It’s got its weak spots (the Kid Cudi track, but at least it ended a beef), but at least it’s a full story. It’s Drake being Drake. All the while, Kanye is so messy on this album. The production is questionable and this is the most uninspired rapping I have heard from an established rapper since Jay-Z’s Kingdom Come. I would put Kanye’s DONDA in my list for the worst albums of the year, chilling with Smokepurpp’s PSYCHO and Playboy by Tory Lanez. This album shouldn’t have been released, nevertheless against a rapper who actually raps for a living. Quit Kanye. Quit yesterday.
