The Best Classic Rap Songs Heard in 2021
2021 was a year of major reflection and so I thought back on some of my favorite artists or songs that I listened to a lot at major points in my life that evoked reactions. Instead of choosing albums, I have chosen rap songs by the artists: Tupac, Coolio, Eminem, DMX, and LL Cool J.
First is Ghetto Gospel by Tupac. This is one of Tupac’s most socially conscious songs dealing with his truth of growing up in the ghetto and clearing up societal and racial misconceptions because in the end we are all humans sharing one world. Overall this song is 10/10, it is a look at how people have lived and strived to survive with the lot that they are given in life, it is a beautiful blend of music and lyrics that inspire hope for the future.
Second is Gangsta's Paradise by Coolio and Rico Bernasconi. The song is catchy and could instill the need to want to dance but if you listen to the lyrics it is also a warning, be it to the gangsters of the time or the gangsters to come. The ending verse shows that they are trying to open your mind to the situation of hood-raised children and the hurt that that brings to the people involved.
Tell me why are we so blind to see
That the ones we hurt are you and me?
Tell me why are we so blind to see
That the ones we hurt are you and me?
Overall this song is 9.5/10.
Third is Cold Wind Blows by Eminem. This song is found on his album Recovery which is my ultimate favorite album by Eminem. The opening of the song talks about how some things will always be constant but then it is better that they stay the same, which gave a sort of understanding to human nature but also if you reflect could also give an understanding to your personality. Overall this song is 10/10 if following the 10 point rating system but in all honesty this song is beyond being able to rate as it has been quite invaluable to myself in understanding
Fourth is Party Up (Up In Here) by DMX which I just find as a super fun and catchy song with a fun beat that makes you just feel like you can just move and forget your troubles even if only for a little bit. Overall this song is 8/10. I love that it gives the listener a chance to let loose and just enjoy life no matter the situations or pressures that life tends to bring.
Finally is Mamma Said Knock You Out by LL Cool J. Honestly this song is just a fun catchy song.
All of the above mentioned songs have either been played during times of happiness, anger, sadness, or self-discovery. They will always hold a special place within my heart and isn't that just why an artist loves to share their work. Artists use their mediums to aid humanity to be more open and understanding to each other and most importantly to themselves.
