The Pinkpint

My anaconda don't, my anaconda don't

My anaconda don't want none unless you got buns, hun

~Anaconda (Nicki Minaj)

I have mad respect for the women who do not conform or control the way that they are viewed within the community and gain a name and position for themselves among their peers, some even able to bypass or stand on equal footing with them. One such rapper that has garnered my respect as an artist is Nicki Minaj. In my personal opinion, she could be on equal footing with say Drake, which is a good middle-level rapper. This month we are talking about The Pinkprint which was released on December 15th, 2014.

In November of 2013 Nicki in talking about her project described it as  “next level”, very different from anything I’ve done.” She also states that she experimented with pop music but never had the intention to continue within that genre. The cover is a black background with a fingerprint in pink dust. The album is full of emotionally charged songs, sweet beats, and amazing collaborations such as with Beyoncé, Skylar Grey, Drake, and Lil Wayne. The album while awesome overall had 4 stand out songs in my opinion.

The first song is All Things Go which is also the first song on the album. It is a song that personally feels like a reminder that life goes on especially when all things go is said after talking about some of events that have occurred such as the year being 2006 then a proposal, the death of her cousin and what happened in her gaining fame. Nicki in the song mentions the situations that have occurred with in her life but and gives a view of her character as someone who is strong and pushed through her struggles. I also love that the whole song hits hard witha heavy bass and subtle synths mixed in.

Another song that is on the list is I lied. A slow and emotional song in which you sense Nicki’s reget of pushing someone away to protect herself from hurt and that is something that many people can relate to.

I thought eventually you would let me go

That was my insecurities and my ego

Missed my jump shot missed my free throw

Miss the way we kiss miss the D, yo

Man it was good while it lasted

The other two songs were Only and Anaconda. Only was enjoyable beat-wise, while Drake and Lil Wayne had good verses respectively. Anaconda on the other hand has a catchy beat and you could hear the first few words of the lyrics and the rest of the song comes to mind quickly.

Overall the album is 10/10  but with like a 1000000% chance that I would recommend it to anyone.
