SuperBowl 2022
Dr. Dre, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Snoop Dogg, is this a throwback of some sort? All of these artists are artists that if you are the last of the elite (if you know, you know), that we grew up within the early 2000’s and 2010’s. It is clear that Jay Z pulled off some next-level magical ish to bring these icons to the 2022 SuperBowl. One would have thought that given the music and artists popping up today that the SuperBowl lineup would consist of ‘Lil’ this and ‘Lil’ that. Not that I have a problem with any of the Lils. It is nice that some OG hip-hop icons are together to perform at only one of the most important parts of the football season. Since the SuperBowl is in Inglewood the lineup is actually culturally in line. Am I surprised? I’m not sure. What we prospective viewers are more concerned about is: who is performing what? Is this gonna be a legit throwback, or are we gonna be smacked with some new hits?
Personally I would love for Eminem to perform with Dr. Dre their hits such as ‘Forgot About Dre’ or ‘I Need A Doctor’. I am expecting, actually no, demanding that ‘Lose Yourself’ is performed. I also would love it if all the artists performed ‘Lose Yourself’ as that is nothing but a classic hype masterpiece.
No shade to the 2010’s but lowkey they need their own relatable icon and luckily they got the legend Kendrick Lamar, am I jealous that it’s not JCole or Drizzy that had gotten the honor of performing the SuperBowl, y’all ogs already know the answer. Moving on swiftly… I am expecting ‘Backseat Freestyle’, ‘King Kunta’, and ‘DNA’ to be performed. This is nonnegotiable. That is all.
THROWBACK ALERT: Mary Freaking J Blige. I totally did not forget that she still performs. Come at me. 13 studio albums, 8 have achieved multi-platinum WORLDWIDE sales, and sold 100 million records worldwide, if you want me to continue please go sit down, and wait patiently for an article on the legend that is Mary J Blige. I am fully expecting to hear ‘Family Affair’. Moreso it would be legendary if she hopped on to one of Eminem’s hit tracks.
Snoop Doggy Dogg, rap's fave high guy (if you don’t get it you’re too young). Wholesome af, high af, some of the smoothest bars transcending time itself, even if you were born 12 years ago, you know who this legend is. If not stay under your rock, please. Expectations are sky-high for this legend, rightfully so. I will riot if I am not jamming to these hits: ‘Nothing But a G Thang’ ‘Gin and Juice’, ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot’.
For once I am actually excited about the SuperBowl, wait let me be more clear, the Halftime Show of the SuperBowl. It makes my old ass self feel appreciated, and slightly and I mean slightly reassured that the new generation is getting a taste of what we millennials so affectionately call culture… Once again no shade (maybe)
