BET Awards are Better than the Grammys

If you've never read my previous comments on the Grammys, they’re plenty. An abridged version of my opinion is that the Grammys are one of the most - if not the absolute - ridiculous institutions in music today. Based on an apparent lack of understanding of the Hip-Hop community and black people in general, the golden gramophone award show is the proof of incompetence on a grand scale, at least for rap. A common theory that I have heard is that the BET Awards are the substitute for it.

It's a decent comparison.

The outstanding idea that says that Hip-Hop is better represented by the BET Awards than by the Grammys comes from how the black community, which creates the majority of the culture, is better at deciding what the culture listens to. While the entire debate becomes a racial one, it can almost be understood. The fact that black people are able to control their culture should make sense to anybody. Any person who doesn't belong in the latino community shouldn't be in charge of the music and the culture that it's associated with it, just like any other minority.

The ultimate rebuttal to entire idea is that this becomes a racial problem: blacks won't pick white artists because they want to exclude. "Reverse racism". The conceptualisation of such a thought is assonnine in nature and should naturally neer be even considered. But, if someone can conceive the worst in humanity, there must be at least one person to subscribe to actually accomplishing said fact. While the system in which the voting is done within BET continues to not be easily accessible to viewers, the "reverse racism" card can always be used to the detriment of black entertainment as a whole.

Therefore, do I believe that BET is better than the Grammys? Not exactly. I think that both systems can be altered in a way in which the right person doesn't win.

The ideal situation, would be, a combination of three voting parties: artists, media reviewers and the fans. In an 25-25-50 split, every person can be heard while the major problems can be removed. The musicians tend to listen to other musicians but won't forcefully listen to what the popular consumer will. Reviewers are meant to listen to a large volume, giving them a better understanding of what is good but also making them very much jaded. Finally, the fans can give their perception as Hip-Hop was made to entertain them, all while not overpowering the overall vote due to the rappers and critics.

In my opinion, I believe that this should be the norm through every single award show; it would be a lot easier. While I don't believe that my system is without fault, perfect in nature and without fault, it's better than secret societies giving awards in genres that they clearly don't listen to themselves.
