Best Hip-Hop Songs of the Year
So a year that seemingly never wanted to end, is finally coming to an end. I’ll be frank: I am happy. Not for a new year, but for the end of this one. It’s been a long, dark and winding road to get to the point where we can get to here. Through threats of the end of the world - via mediums such as pestilence, wildfire or war - we made it out with scratches. We won’t forget the year that we had.
At least, I hope we don’t forget the good songs that came out in 2020.
Let’s talk about the five best Hip-Hop songs of the year:
5. “WAP”
Megan Thee Stallion & Cardi B
Let’s start this list with something so controversial that it would break the internet for the second time. Bringing together two of the best female rappers in the game today in Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B, it is a sexually infused bump that was played everywhere in the summer. Megan hit us with a second pick for song of the summer.
4. What’s Poppin
Jack Harlow
Who really knew who Jack Harlow was before 2020? If there is something that is good about the year is the quiet that came from the biggest artists and the awesome that came from newer artists. Jack Harlow used “What’s Poppin” as a jump off for a pop/rap career that can span years. What’s great is that he’s capitalizing with more tracks like “Tyler Herro”.
3. Savage
Megan Thee Stallion
Megan Thee Stallion has landed on the list again and it is with another banger for the club. You know, the clubs that were closed for most of the year? Oh well, “Savage” was something that we could listen to and just forget the horrible stuff that was going on around us. For some, it’s an anthem, while for others, it’s a dirty little secret in your Spotify playlist. For everyone, it’s a bop.
2. Life is Good
Another year, another Drake and Future track that has managed to infect the entire world. Let the canadian crooner give you the instagram captions that will permeate your feed and let the Atlanta trapper blast it with his unique sound. “Life is Good” is the complete opposite of the year; a sentence that can only be used by the luckiest of us. But damn, the song is good.
1. The Box
This is a Rich world. Roddy took the game over with “The Box”. While it isn’t a full lyrical masterpiece or a five-minute musical extravaganza, it’s what the world needed: something fun and powerful. It’s one of those tracks that can stand the test of time and will be played on repeat once parties return to being the norm. So let’s celebrate an accomplishment and what Roddy has done.
So ends our first of our many lists for this month of December. We can’t wait to see you all as we go through the best artists, albums and classic albums that we covered this year.
